Mshangano Secondary was saved from closure last month, thanks to the fantastic team runners at Ward Hadaway who raised funds in the their 3 Points North challenge.
Mshangano Secondary is one of our newest partner Schools for Life. The school was struggling and turned to Hoja Project and COCO for support. From being outside the top 100 schools in the region, it is now in the top 10!
However, the infrastructure at the school was severely lacking. The government decided that the school could not remain open with the buildings in the state that they were in, and threatened closure if they were not improved by the end of the year.
A team of 50 runners from Ward Hadaway saved the day! They ran a 135-mile non-stop relay from their Manchester office, through Leeds, ending at their Newcastle office. The runners raised enough money to renovate all of the classrooms, dormitory and office at the school. The school is now a great learning environment, where pre-form one students are currently preparing for starting secondary school in January.
And that's not all! The government are so impressed with the effort that has been put in to the renovation that they have invested in the school themselves too, bringing mains water and electricity to the site, and buying football and netball goals for their sports field, saving the school thousands of pounds sourcing these themselves.
We're excited to see how Mshangano develops in the future, we're sure that the students there will soon be giving Hoja Secondary some strong competition for top spot in the region. Thank you Ward Hadaway for making this happen, your support will benefit hundreds of Mshangano students in the coming years!
