COCO Conquers Kili!

In July 12 students from Newcastle University successfully endured the intense physical and mental demands the not so insurmountable, Mount Kiilimajaro had to offer them. The aim of the climb was to raise much needed funds to support COCO. It wasn’t just the students who donned their hiking boots, COCO’s Operations Manager Lucy Philipson went to prove that COCO and their staff are willing to go the extra mile for the causes they feel passionately about.
The trip took extensive planning and organisation. In order to take part, the volunteers were each set the goal of raising £2,500. The students managed to secure their place on the trip by raising the money in a number of creative ways: “I managed to raise money by selling things at car boot sales! I also wrote to local businesses for sponsorship, my parents were also very supportive and helped me a lot.” Lucy
The students successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in six days but their charitable efforts didn’t end there as they are staying to get their hands dirty, supporting COCO’s other ventures in Tanzania. When asked before the trip what they hoped to achieve with the climb, they remarked:
“I want to go in the knowledge that when I leave I will have made a difference.” Jo
“I’m looking forward to the volunteering itself, after the climb. Working with the local communities and getting my hands dirty! That’s the experience I’m looking forward to.” Chris
“I think I will gain a lot of confidence from the trip. Knowing that I have raised the money, done the training and climbed one of the largest mountains in the world will give me an enormous sense of pride and achievement.” Subhi
