COCO Helps To Train Young Staff in Uganda

Friday 21st August 2009

COCO recently funded two Quarterly Staff Workshops conducted by SPW (Students Partnership Worldwide) Uganda.

The two workshops took place in March and July 2009. They focused on staff and orgaisational capacity building and actively engaged all participants in the development of not only their skills and careers but also the growth of the organisation overall.

Perry Maddox, Country Director of SPW Uganda said, "SPW Uganda and its staff have benefited considerably from the support provided by COCO, and SPW Uganda looks forward to continued collaboration as it places young people at the forefront of change and development."

Fourteen SPW Uganda staff participated in a wide range of capacity-building activities during the March 2009 workshop. The sessions were implemented using a variety of non-formal education and participatroy learning techniques, and over the four days every staff member participated actively in small group work, individual presentations to the group, role plays, policy analysis and hands-on training.

Assistant Monitoring and Evaluation Coordinator Natalie Newell said, "QSW's are very important for staff's professional growth. Setting aside this time especially for bringing staff together, to give updates, exchange ideas and to learn new skills is so important...I have benefited tremendously."

SPW's evaluation report stated that, "significant improvements have been noted in the development, management and analysis of budgets and finances by all staff at many levels of the organisation and the level of involvement and participatory design would not have been possible without the Quarterly Staff Workshop." COCO are delighted that the funding of these two workshops has led to such significant improvements at SPW and hope that further collaboration is possible over the coming months.
