Beach Party and BBQ Raise Over £2000 for COCO Projects

Beach Party and BBQ Raise Over £2000 for COCO Projects

Friday 28th August 2009

Partners of COCO have been busy organising their own fundraising events for COCO this summer.

COCO's Hoja UK partners organised their own beach party which took place on the very beautiful Ballyquinn beach in Ireland and was designed to raise funds for the Hoja Income Generation Programme in Tanzania.

Much singing, guitar and accordian-playing and eating of cream cakes was had by all until 3.30am! There were even Tanzanian acrobats who came along and performed with their fire-spinning friends.

Organiser of the event, Julia Brownlow was extremely impressed with the evening:

"The event was successful in so many ways - it raised over £1345.60 for villagers in the Tanga Ward to start mini businesses, it brought local people from the community together, people had an amazing time, it raised awareness about life in Tanzania and people stepped forward and said they'd like to help with Hoja events in the future. Everyone was so cooperative and positive!"

Meanwhile, Jilly Grower, another partner of COCO managed to fit 80 people into her garden in Bournemouth for a very large BBQ! With a raffle and plenty of food to go around £800 was raised. Jilly and her husband Ben aim to host at least one fundraising event each month and also carry out street collections in Bournemouth.

Both Julia and Jilly are great examples of how you can support COCO at home, at work or through your interests. Something as small as a BBQ can make a big difference to our projects!

If you are organising your own event don't forget to let COCO know!

(The attached picture is of one young man who is benefitting from the Income Generation Project provided by the Hoja project. The man received a loan which enabled him to buy a sewing machine and material so that he could set up a small business. THe money from his business will be shared with his family and enable his children to attend school.)
