Steve Cram Reaches the Summit of Kiilmanjaro!

Thursday 12th November 2009

Congratulations to COCO's Chairman Steve Cram who reached the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro on the morning of Friday 6th November at 07:59am!

Steve was one of 28 climbers including Allison Curbishley, former Olympic swimmer Karen Pickering and COCO's Fundraising and Marketing Coordinator Laura Elliott who took part in the Kilimanjaro trek. The group set off on Sunday 1st November and followed the Machame route in a bid to reach the peak of Africa's highest mountain. 21 climbers made it to the summit including Steve and the group battled extreme temperatures, snow, long hours of walking and lack of sleep in an effort to achieve their goal.

The group included businessmen and women from the North East and London, many of whom had signed up to the challenge at the Best Day of My Life dinner back in February.

Whilst in Tanzania the group had the chance to visit two of COCO's projects including the Central Kitchen in Majengo. The kitchen feeds over 500 children who attend the local nurseries and ensures that every child who attends school receives a hot meal each day. The children were very excited to meet Steve and all the group and the children especially enjoyed having their photos taken and then looking at the finished results! They sang songs and danced for the group and it was great to see COCO's projects first hand and witness the results of sponsorship and fundraising.

The group spent 7 days and 6 nights on Kilimanjaro and set off for the summit at 11.30pm on Thursday night! After many hours of walking at extremely high altitude the groups made it to the top and could enjoy a real sense of achievement.

It was definitely one of the hardest experiences they have ever had to endure but it is hoped that over £70,000 will be raised for COCO's proejcts.

Congratulations to everyone who took part, it was a fantastic week and a great experience. Some long lasting friendships have been made and it's another challenge ticked off the list for COCO's Chairman... what will be next for 2010?!
