Pledges from COCO's Red Ribbon Ball send more children to school in Tanzania
Tuesday 19th January 2010
Thanks to the generosity of all our donors who attended the recent COCO Red Ribbon Ball, COCO have received enough pledges to invite another 4 students to take part in our secondary school sponsorship programme. This means that COCO are now able to sponsor 134 students in total.
In Tanzania extreme poverty means that many families struggle to send children to school, especially secondary school. School fees, uniforms and equipment can deter many from attending school and often they come from single parent families and are needed at home.
Thanks to over £5000 donated in pledges at the ball four children have just started secondary school and they are very excited. They are Shukrani (14 years old), Ester (13), Dororosa (14) and Christine (16).
Shukrani has joined Lukala Secondary School. She is an orphan, her parents died as a result of HIV/AIDS in 2003. She lives with her grandfather and now that she has a place at school she hopes to be an educational officer.
Ester's parents are very poor, they can only afford one meal a day. Ester would like to be a primary school teacher and likes netball and running.
Dororosa's father died when she was very young so she lives with her Mum. They cannot afford clothes but her local church have helped to give what they can. Now that she is going to school, she is looking forward to studying Swahili and Maths, she hopes to be a doctor one day.
Christine started secondary school education last year but her parents could not manage to pay the school fees, so she was sent home. Thanks to the sponsorship from COCO she has been able to attend school once again. Christine loves gardening and would like to become a nurse or a doctor.
Thank you to all of you who attended the COCO ball and were able to pledge your support. As you can see, the difference you are making to these children's lives is significant and we are greatful for your support.
