Organisation of the Month: Dunelm Property Services
Tuesday 23rd March 2010
Dunelm Property Services became involved with COCO when David Halfacre, Chairman of Dunelm was introduced to Steve Cram at a Newcastle Eagles basketball game by player coach of the Eagles, Fabulous Flournoy. After being inspired by the work of COCO, Dunelm Property Services sponsored the 2009 COCO Celebrity Golf Day.
Dunelm Property Services are Esh Group's specialist provider of construction services to the social housing sector in the north east of England. Since he was introduced to COCO, Dunelm's Chairman David has been a keen supporter and often finds it hard to say no when invited to take part in an event by Steve! He has attended the golf day, ball and even took to his bike for the 2009 Coast to Coast.
"Another 'offer' that Steve made to me was to do the COCO Coast 2 Coast cycle challenge, another offer made at the basketball one Friday evening! My reaction was 'how difficult can it be?' Well, it was tough, but going across the finish line in Sunderland that sunny October afternoon with my good friends Mark and Cad was the first sporting achievement in my life! It was a fantastic experience, the months of training and the actual challenge was an incredible feeling for someone as un-sporting as me!! It was a taste of what teh achievements of all our sporting heroes must feel like when crossing their 'finishing lines'."
David recently travelled to South Africa to watch the cricket over New Year and while he was there he had the chance to visit iThemba Lethu and see the impact that COCO is making to the lives of children supported by the project.
"It was a privilege to be invited to visit iThemba Lethu, the children were so happy and contented and, Liz Holley, the house mother cared so much for the youngsters in her care. It's made such a difference to have met some of the children who are helped by all the fundraising we all do!"
Following yet another "offer" from Steve, and he doesn't expect it to be the last, David will be climbing Kilimanjaro in 2011 for COCO and is relishing the opportunity to visit Tanzania and take on another challenge in support of COCO.
Dunelm Property Services are again the proud sponsors of the 2010 COCO Golf Day which takes place on the 16th June at Slaley Hall. If you would like to find out any more information about the Golf Day, Coast to Coast or climbing Kilimanjaro please contact Laura (laura@coco.org.uk).
