Supporter of the Month: Julie Sparrow
Tuesday 23rd March 2010
Julie Sparrow has been a committed long term supporter of COCO since 2003 when she took part in the Comrades Marathon for the first time. Julie also introduced COCO to her close friend Pat Taylor who sadly passed away in November last year. Julie and Pat travelled all over the world fundraising for COCO, taking part in fun runs and walks. Both Julie and Pat became members of COCO in 2006.
Julie is an extremely positive person who does not let anything get her down. Having beaten breast cancer in 2003 Julie has continued to take part in just about every running event and ultra marathon you can imagine. Julie was born in Saltburn, North Yorkshire and was a PE teacher until her late twenties when she retrained as a physiotherapist and has since worked with Great Britain's gymnasts, rowing teams and golfers.
Whislt in South Africa Julie and Pat visited iThemba Lethu where they both realised the impact that their fundraising had upon the lives of children affected by HIV/AIDS. Although her day job as a Senior Lecturer at Teeside University keeps her busy, Julie's passion lies in running and since 2003 she has completed the Great Wall of China Marathon in 2005 and the Big Sur Marathon in California in 2007 for COCO. Throughout every running event Pat accompanied Julie and acted as her fundraiser and cheerleader, helping Julie to raise over £8300 for COCO.
Julie is also a member of TeamCOCO and will be taking part in the London Marathon in April to raise funds for COCO and in memory of Pat.
Julie is a true inspiration to those who know her and to all of us at COCO. Julie is passionate about fundraising for COCO, she believes firmly in our objectives which is what makes her such a great advocate.
Next year Julie will be joining Steve Cram, David Halfacre and others to climb Kilimanjaro which will be an altogether different experience from the many running events she has taken part in. Whislt in Tanzania Julie will visit more of COCO's proejcts and see the impact her fundraising has upon children's lives.
If you would like to join Julie in her bid to reach Africa's highest mountain please contact Laura (laura@coco.org.uk or call 0191 261 7427).
