Watoto: March - Brighter Futures for South Africa's Orphans

Watoto: March - Brighter Futures for South Africa's Orphans

Tuesday 23rd March 2010

Baby TD is now 16 months old, he was found abandoned in a black refuse bag on the side of a road in Durban when he was only one day old.

He was placed in the care of iThemba Lethu in October 2008. After his arrival, we discovered that Baby TD was HIV positive and needed immediate anti-retrovial (ARV) therapy. He was fed breastmilk (from the iThemba Lethu Breastmilk Bank) exclusively for the first six months. His health improved significantly and he has had no negative side-effects to the treatment.

Today he is a healthy little boy and started walking soon after his first birthday. He loves sitting on the trampoline and being bounced by the older children. Staff at iThemba Lethu are in the process of screening a family who is interested in adopting him and trust that he will be placed in their loving and secure family in the near future. Until then, he remains one of the darlings of iThemba Lethu.

More about iThemba Lethu

iThemba Lethu means "I have a destiny" and COCO works with iThemba Lethu to address the issues of abandoned babies and youth education associated with HIV/AIDS. iThemba Lethu seeks to invest in children who are at high risk of having their future negatively impacted by HIV/AIDS and also assists in the process of integrating orphaned and abandoned babies into suitable family environments.

COCO has been involved with iThemba Lethu since 2003 and this is a very special project to COCO, especially as many of our Comrades runners have visited whilst out in South Africa. We continue to support them as we truly believe they are making a difference for the long term.
