Students Summit Kilimanjaro!
Monday 28th June 2010
Congratulations to the 27 students from Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Durham Univeristies who made it to the summit of Kilimanjaro on the morning of Friday 25th June!
The intrepid student group had been taking part in COCO's Climb Kili for Kids challenge which saw them undertake a 7 day, 6 night trek up Africa's highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. Despite tired legs and battling the effects of altitude all but one of the students made it to the summit and all the students attempted summit, a fantastic achievement for the whole group!
Prior to their trek the group had been able to visit one of COCO's projects in Moshi, the Central Kitchen Project and they met some of the children who attended the nursery school and benefited from COCO's support. It was an emotional visit for many of the group but a real chance for them to witness the impact their fundraising will have and it helped to motivate them during their trek.
This is the largest student group to climb Kilimanjaro for COCO and it's expected that between them they will raise over £50,000 for COCO's projects.
Following their triumphant summit the group descended and enjoyed celebrations in Moshi where they were presented with certificates to mark their achievement. Many of them have now departed for Zanzibar or Safaris and following their brief break they will continue to Southern Tanzania to COCO's projects in Songea where they will volunteer for several weeks.
All of us at COCO are extremely proud of the group and we can't wait to find out more about the trek and see the photos!
Thanks to all the students who took part in the trek and to their friends and family who have supported them along the way.
