Nkwawangya Community Health Project
Friday 16th July 2010
Support the community of Nkwawangya in Tanzania and get involved with COCO's malaria bed net appeal.
Nkwawayanga is a small village of approximately 300 families located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in the North of Tanzania, two hours away from the larger towns of Arusha and Moshi. The majority of families in Nkwawangya are subsistence farmers who grow maize to sell so they can pay for their children's education and health.
COCO works with the community to help fund their primary school and health centre. Nkwawangya community health project started as an incentive to promote health education in the village and has now grown to include a clinic and dispensary with a doctor and midwife who provide consultation, advice, counselling, treatment and prescriptions.
Funds raised for the project have also provided access to water, new sinks and toilets and go towards the salary for a tailoring teacher as well as for materials in the school's Vocational Training Centre. Funding also assists with school uniforms, books, pencils and fees for some of the worst off children at the school.
The clinic provides vital healthcare for the community in line with the Millennium Development Goals to improve child and maternal health through midwifery, malaria testing and the supply of basic medicines which can mean the difference between life and death.
Thanks to your support COCO have big plans for the community including a new health education programme and the expansion of the clinic to include separate rooms for the doctor and midwife's consultations, an examination room, a separate room for the dispensary and even in the future, space with beds for those needing 24hour care.
Malaria
90% of all malaria cases in sub-Saharan Africa where it is the main cause of death adn a major threat to child health. Worldwide, a child dies of malaria every 30 seconds. Pregnant women are also particularly vulnerable to the disease. As in the case of Cheryl Cole, malaria is curable if treated early but unfortuantely many of those affected in African countries are unable to access medical treatment due to a lack of hospitals where they live and if they do make it to hospital, they are unable to afford the medication required.
One of the main aims of the Nkwawangya Health Project is to prevent and cure malaria. It costs just £3 to buy a treated mosquito net and COCO can distribute nets and educate teh community on how to use them.
We need your help! Donate just £3 to buy a net and you could help prevent a trip to the hospital for one of our families in this community. To donate please visit: www.justgiving.com/bednetsforcoco.
Thank You.
