Steve celebrates a very special anniversary

Steve celebrates a very special anniversary

Tuesday 27th July 2010

Although Steve Cram is the Founder and Chairman of COCO, he is better known for his athletic achievements and involvement with the sport. On the 15th July Steve celebrated the 25th anniversary of one of the greatest achievements in athletics and COCO also benefited from the celebrations!

A gala dinner was held in London to commemorate Steve breaking three world records in 19 days. Back on the 16th July 1985 Steve broke his first record in a nail-biting 1,500m race in Nice when he beat Said Aouita by four one hundredths of a second.

The next record came eleven days later in Oslo when Steve smashed his world record for a mile and defeated Seb Coe in the process.

Finally, on August 4th in a race against the clock in Budapest, he took the 2000m world record away from New Zealander John Walker.

The 'Back to the Future' was attended by over 200 guests including Michael Johnson, Paula Radcliffe, Colin Jackson, Daley Thompson, Dame Kelly Holmes, Sally Gunnell and Des Lynam. After a three course dinner and plenty of speeches, guests danced the night away to a Blondie tribute band, 'So Blondie & So'.

The dinner provided an opportunity for Said Aouita, Seb Coe, Sir John Walker and Steve to be reunited for the first time since the 1980's record-breaking achievements. They are all pictured in the photo above.

During the evening an auction and raffle was held in support of COCO and thanks to the generosity of all the guests and sponsors, COCO are pleased to announce that a grand total of £7000 has been raised!

This will allow COCO to continue to support children in our projects who are in need of education and healthcare provision so that they can access brighter futures.

Thank you to the event organisers, Extra Mile Media and Events and a special thanks must go to Steve for his continued support of COCO.
