Nkwawangya is a remote village located on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Northern Tanzania. Villagers walk long distances to the closest market, and must walk thirty minutes to the nearest transport point, where local buses can take them to the major towns of Moshi or Arusha an hour away.
COCO started working with the community in 2010 and has since improved facilities at the primary school, nursery and vocational training centre (VTC). COCO worked with the community to build a new kitchen and permanent toilet blocks of 20 separate cubicles and install two rainwater harvesting tanks, with a combined capacity of 6,000 litres.
COCO has also been involved in the refurbishment of the VTC and the purchase of new carpentry tools and a sewing machine, which enables students to gain marketable skills, and the school to generate income to sustain itself.
