Located in a very remote area on the Kenya-Ugandan border, Emmanuel Primary school is run by the Emmanuel Self Help Group (ESHG), having been set up as a community initiative. Previously, children had to walk 7km to the nearest school. The school currently has 285 pupils (3 of whom are disabled), 9 teachers and 2 support staff. It is one of the poorest areas in Uganda, with many parents unable to afford basic shoes for their children.
Most teachers at the school are volunteers, which, whilst well-intentioned, means they lack essential teaching skills that can improve education standards. There is also a high turnover rate of volunteer teachers each month. COCO aims to train the community in sustainable agriculture alongside our partners the Hoja Project and develop a food farm, raising income in the community to make the school more sustainable and ensure the employment of qualified teachers. Furthermore, a new classroom and administration room are planned to replace the unsafe mud classrooms and makeshift outdoor teaching area that will provide a more nurturing environment for these young children to learn and ensure the school can reach the standards required to be registered by the government.
That’s why COCO need your help!
