8th March

International Women's Day is celebrated annually on 8th March to commemorate the cultural, political, and socioeconomic achievements of women and to champion further gender equality across the globe.

The theme for the United Nations International Women's Day 2024 was Invest in women: Accelerate progress.

COCO marked this occasion with a virtual film screening!

You can still participate whenever and wherever suits you, and spark discussion around women's issues and empowerment globally.

Why not host your own cinema night and raise funds for COCO to #InvestInWomen! We have everything you need in our fabulous film party pack, available to download so you can prep the perfect party for you and your friends.

Click below to get involved with the virtual film screening and to request a downloadable party pack. The film info and pack is free for everyone, but if you also feel able to donate then of course COCO would use the funds to #InvestInWomen at our overseas partnerships!

COCO's film choice

For our film choice we've picked Period. End of Sentence.

This Academy Award-winning short documentary from 2018 follows a group of local women in Uttar Pradesh, India as they lead a quiet sexual revolution. Director Rayka Zehtabchi charts the empowerment of the women and girls as they face up to cultural taboos surrounding menstruation, work and economic independence.  It's an inspiring watch, and we hope it will prompt lots of discussion around the inequalities women still face globally, the positive progress that has been made, and what needs to happen next!

Period poverty is still an important global issue. A lack of access to adequate menstruation products puts personal health and hygiene at risk, and cultural stigmas and lack of sexual health education prompts many students to miss school when they start having periods.

COCO works with our overseas partners to remove barriers to education and to empower women and girls. Any donations received this International Women's Day will be used to #InvestInWomen to continue this vital work!

Click below to receive more information about our film choice and to make a donation if you feel able. Thank you!

Period. End of Sentence is only 26 minutes long, so you could make a night of it by watching another film afterwards! Here are some suggestions for your International Women's Day watch list:

  • Are you there God? It's me, Margaret
